Clerk's desk/August 30, 2026
Sacramento County is not the state mailbox
CDPH and the Sacramento County Clerk/Recorder both sit in Sacramento. They are different desks. If the death was in the county, use the county address.
A Sacramento postmark does not tell you which office has the record. The county Clerk/Recorder issues deaths that occurred in Sacramento County. The California Department of Public Health issues statewide mail copies from a P.O. box. Mixing the two is how a packet sits for weeks.
County counter
- Sacramento County Clerk/Recorder, 8239 East Stockton Boulevard, Suite A, Sacramento, CA 95828.
- $26 per certified copy this check. Same dollar amount as the state, usually faster for a local death.
- Authorized copies need a sworn statement and, for mail, a notary. Informational copies are stamped not valid to establish identity.
- Bring valid government-issued photo ID.
State mail, same city
CDPH Vital Records mail is P.O. Box 997410, Sacramento, CA 95899-7410, payable to CDPH-VR, currently $26 per death copy and several weeks. Use it when the death was in another California county, or when you cannot reach a county counter. Do not put the county street address on a CDPH form, or the CDPH box on a county form.
Confirm both fees on ccr.saccounty.gov and cdph.ca.gov before you write a check. Online county orders go through a vendor. This desk takes no cut.
