San Antonio deaths are usually the city clerk
Bexar County's own page sends hospital deaths to the City of San Antonio. Confirm the place of death before you mail 100 Dolorosa.
Bexar County and the City of San Antonio are not the same counter. The Bexar County Clerk's birth-and-death page says births or deaths that took place in a hospital during the period it describes are available through the Office of the City Clerk of San Antonio. For a typical recent death in the city, start with sa.gov, not the county basement.
City of San Antonio
- Office of the City Clerk, Vital Records. Phone listed on the county page: 210-207-7253. Order page: sa.gov death certificate.
- First copy $21. Additional copies of the same record in the same transaction $4. Online orders add a processing fee. This desk takes no cut.
- Qualified requestors include parent, grandparent, spouse, child, sibling, legal guardian, or attorney, with proof of relationship or legal interest.
- Bring valid ID from the Texas DSHS acceptable-identification list.
When the county is the right desk
The county clerk lists a narrower set: some at-home deaths in rural Bexar County in older years, and it points hospital deaths to the city. If you are not sure, read bexar.org/2952/Birth-and-Death-Certificates before you write a money order. Texas DSHS remains the statewide mail option with cheap extra copies.
Confirm the $21 / $4 city fees on sa.gov before you pay. The county page did not list a current death-copy dollar amount this check. Do not guess the county fee.
