Ten Copies

Field guides/3 min

If the funeral home already ordered copies

Ask how many they filed, who they were for, and whether any are still in the folder before you pay the state again.

Start with a phone call, not a new application

Funeral homes routinely order the first certified copies as part of the arrangement. Those copies may already be sitting in a packet you have not opened, or they may have been mailed to a life insurer. Call and ask for a count, the recipients, and whether they can order more on the same filing.

More copies later

Once the record is registered (often 7 to 14 days after the death), you can order more from the county or the state. You do not need the funeral home’s permission. You do need the date and place of death, and to be an eligible requestor.
