Official office

The Harris County Clerk does not keep every Houston-area death. Deaths inside the city limits of Houston go to the City of Houston. Baytown, La Porte, South Houston, Jacinto City, and some JP precincts are also carved out. If the death was in Houston, use the city health department, not this county desk.

Who may request

Immediate family: self, parents, grandparents, legal spouse, sibling, or children, with valid identification, per the County Clerk.

What to bring

Valid identification (state ID, driver license, passport, or other ID the Clerk lists). Mail requests use the Clerk's notarized forms. Confirm the current ID list on the official page.

Where to write or visit

Mail: Harris County Clerk's Office, ATTN: Personal Records, P.O. Box 1525, Houston, Texas 77251-1525.

Notes from the desk

County extras are $4 on the same request. Texas DSHS extras are $3. Either way, extras on the first order beat a second wait. Mail with a cashier's check or money order payable to Harris County Clerk. Do not mail cash or a personal check.
